Research interests

My research interests embrace the broad field of wireless communications and networking, with special emphasis on several theoretical and experimental aspects of cellular mobile communication technologies, heterogeneous radio access networks and dynamic spectrum access in cognitive radio systems.


The main research topics I have been working so far are:

  • Dynamic spectrum access in cognitive radio systems:
    • Cognitive spectrum and radio resource management.
    • Spectrum monitoring and measurements.
    • Statistical modelling of spectrum occupancy.
    • Spectrum sensing and estimation techniques.
    • Prototyping and experimental evaluation of DSA/CR solutions.
  • Cellular mobile communication systems and heterogeneous radio access networks:
    • 2G/3G/4G/5G systems (GSM, GPRS/EDGE, UMTS, HSPA, LTE/LTE-A/LTE-A Pro, 5G NR).
    • Radio resource management in cellular systems.
    • Common radio resource management in heterogeneous radio access networks.
    • Quality of service provisioning.
    • System-level simulation and emulation.
    • Prototyping and experimental evaluation.
  • Internet of Things:
    • Provision of IoT services through short/medium/long range wireless technologies.
    • Optimisation of wireless communication systems for IoT.
    • System-level simulation and emulation.
    • Prototyping and experimental evaluation.

I also have interests in other areas such as energy harvesting/energy efficient/green communications, cooperative communications, self-organising networks and some areas of communication theory.
